Modern communications on Superyachts
There are many elements which put the ‘super’ into superyacht, but one of the most important is technology. When you’re out at sea, far away from a standard electricity supply, technology becomes even more of a luxury. And the best superyachts are the ones which tackle and solve this challenge. As a result, tech companies have invested significant effort in developing equipment which allows superyachts to keep pace with technology trends.
Internet on Superyachts
The internet is an integral part of modern life, and it’s allowed us the luxury of watching movies, listening to music, contacting friends and doing our shopping wherever we are. However, connecting to the internet whilst on a yacht has, traditionally, been plagued by problems such as slow speeds and zero coverage. Thankfully, there are now a number of solutions:
- Mobile Data: Even the most basic mobile plans provide significant amounts of data, and this makes them perfect for internet connections on a superyacht. However, you may need to invest in an onboard signal booster to tackle any issues with dead spots.
- Bonded Internet Connection: this form of internet connection combines multiple internet connections – such as 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi hotspots – from various providers to create a ‘super connection’ for your superyacht. More reliable than mobile data, bonded internet also provides greater bandwidth.
- Satellite Internet: if you’re looking for the ultimate ‘internet at sea’ solution then satellite internet ticks every box. With global coverage which allows high bandwidth, it’s capable of delivering the quality of internet you would expect at home. Naturally, equipment is very expensive, but it’s a sure-fire way to underline the sophistication of your superyacht.
The internet, of course, is the backbone of all modern communication, and all of these internet solutions allow your superyacht to support this. With one of these options in place, you and your guests will be able to Skype, WhatsApp and Zoom with ease.
Superyacht Audio Visual Technology
When you head out on a superyacht, you are usually looking to escape and unwind from the rigours of the modern world. And one of the simplest ways to relax is with good music and movies. However, for a truly satisfying experience, you also need high quality AV equipment which works across the entire vessel.
Luckily, superyacht AV technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last decade. The most notable advance has been in bespoke control systems which users can download to their mobile devices. These allow you to configure specific AV systems in specific rooms e.g. adjusting the volume and brightness of a TV screen in a bedroom to a user’s personal preference.
However, the fun doesn’t stop here, as these control systems also allow you to access external hard drives and apps - such as Netflix – to delve through entire libraries of content. These panels don’t necessarily need to be accessed through your mobile device either, they can also be mounted as fixed units on the wall. Best of all, many of these units embrace voice activation to deliver easy accessibility.
The final challenge to tackle is the level of audio quality. The ambient sound challenges presented by the sea mean ordinary speakers can sometimes struggle to cut through the waves. However, marine speakers present a satisfying solution. Fully splashproof and packed full of mid-range technology to tackle the noise of the sea, these speakers will make you forget you’re even on the water.
