01 / THE PROJECT
Structured cabling for a four-floor office redevelopment
NM Cabling delivered a coordinated office data cabling and technology
infrastructure installation at Queens House in St Albans, Hertfordshire
Working on behalf of the client's appointed IT company, our team
installed 250 Cat6 and 40 Cat6a outlets across four floors, alongside
infrastructure for Wi-Fi, CCTV, access control and audio-visual systems.
The ten-month programme required close coordination with the construction
contractor, architects and interior designers, with every revised
floor handover deadline met.

02 / THE CHALLENGE
Coordinating IT infrastructure with the building's design and construction
Multiple stakeholders
The Queens House redevelopment involved several teams working to a shared construction programme. The end client had appointed a main construction contractor, architects, interior designers and an IT company, with NM Cabling nominated as the IT company's infrastructure installation partner.
Our role required ongoing communication between these parties, ensuring that the IT infrastructure requirements were understood and incorporated into the wider building programme.
Coordinated installation design
The architects and interior designers produced the construction drawings, while the IT company developed the layouts for its technology and equipment. Our responsibility was to plan how the cabling, containment and associated infrastructure could be installed within those designs.
Cable routes, traywork, conduit, communication cabinets and equipment locations had to work around lighting, switches, artwork, architectural features and the requirements of other trades.
Where conflicts were identified, we worked with the relevant teams to agree changes and update the installation drawings. Every outlet needed to be identified and numbered, with additional containment documented for the final handover.
Changing construction programme
With construction progressing across four floors, our installation programme had to remain aligned with the main contractor's schedule and planned floor-by-floor handovers.
As handover dates changed, we had to adapt our installation schedules and coordinate additional labour where necessary, while ensuring our works did not delay other trades or the revised completion dates.
03 / OUR APPROACH
From coordinated drawings to installation and handover
NM Cabling provided dedicated on-site project management, supported by ongoing off-site coordination with the IT company, construction contractor and wider design team.
We reviewed the proposed equipment locations against the building drawings and developed practical routes for cabling and containment. Where installations conflicted with architectural features or other building services, we worked with the relevant parties to agree suitable adjustments.
Coordinating the installation
The installation involved eight interconnected technology and infrastructure elements:
- Structured cabling and data outlets
- Cable traywork and conduit
- Communication cabinets
- Television and video conferencing infrastructure
- Room booking systems
- CCTV
- Access control
- Wi-Fi infrastructure
Project management and documentation
Weekly site meetings and regular Teams calls helped keep design changes, installation requirements and construction activities coordinated throughout the project.
As the installation developed, we updated the relevant drawings to reflect agreed changes, outlet numbering and additional containment. These records formed part of the final technical handover.
Our team also coordinated installation activities with the main contractor and adjusted labour resources as programme dates changed, ensuring every revised floor handover deadline was met.
04 / THE RESULTS
Four floors delivered to changing construction deadlines
The Queens House project was completed through a series of phased floor handovers, with installation dates changing as the wider construction programme developed.
NM Cabling adjusted its installation schedule and deployed additional engineers where required to meet the revised deadlines. Despite these changes, we met every agreed floor handover date.
At completion, the IT company received updated installation drawings, patching documentation and Fluke structured cabling test results.
4 Phased Handovers
Every revised floor handover deadline was met, despite changes to the construction programme.
Updated Installation Drawings
Final documentation included outlet numbering, installation locations and containment changes.
Flexible Resourcing
Additional installation engineers were deployed when programme changes required increased resources.
Technical Handover
Patching documentation and Fluke structured cabling test results were supplied to the IT company.
