History of the Pier

Bournemouth Pier Fibre Optic Cabling Case Study

Bournemouth Pier was originally a 100 foot wooden jetty and was opened on 2nd August 1856. However it t was replaced in 1861 by a 1000 foot wooden pier

Throughout the pier are several offices, counters and technology positions all that require some form of communication

The main administration office and main incoming ISP and server are separated by the length of the pier. Therefore as part of the broadband upgrade a new fibre optic cable was required to be installed.

Fibre Optic Cabling Installation

There was an existing marine grade fibre link from one end of the Pier to the other. However due to general wear and tear on the previous Fibre Optic Cabling a new fibre link was required. This was undertaken and installed by NM Cabling on behalf of the Pier operator

As the boardwalk of the pier itself has no routes for cabling the installation was of a complicated nature. Therefore the cabling had to be installed and secured under the pier itself. In addition as the pier is based in its entirety above water the installation had to be coordinated with the tides. Thus to meet safety constrictions and feasibility of installation.

Marine Fibre Cabling

The environment in which the pier sits is rated an extreme environment. Its exposed to the elements of the wind, rain and seawater, Therefore the data cabling had to be marine grade to withstand the hostile environments associated with the pier and its location.

These specialist cables use marine grade sheath compounds in accordance with IEC 60092-359. Thus enabling the cable to be used inside and outside. Therefore  reducing the need to change cable types. Specifically they are designed for use on yachts, boats and larger commercial ships. Therefore the perfect choice for the pier installation also
